Crafty Spirit plows through the mud to score easily at Doomben

Apr 29, 2019

The weather conditions were far from favourable for the last race on the card at Doomben. Crafty Spirit was desperate for a run so Danny decided not to scratch even though he wasn’t sure of his chances on the Heavy 10 track. So far none of the progeny of Spirit of Boom had been comfortable on wet tracks so it was a bit of a surprise for everyone when Crafty Spirit pricked his ears and sprinted through the mud winning by 3.5 lengths. We had first been attracted to the horse when his breeder Ross Boucher put up his pedigree page on Facebook prior to the Magic Millions 2YO in Training Sale. We noted that the 3rd dam Strawbrette (Whiskey Road x Giftisa) was a full sister to Danny’s father Doug Bougoure’s Champion Strawberry Road. After being passed in at the sale and having a three month spell we purchased the colt and sold shares to our owners. He has been a slow maturing horse both physically and mentally but hopefully this metropolitan win will be the start of him putting it all together to show his natural talent. It would be something of a fairytale if the relation of Strawberry Road was to become something special wearing the famous Bougoure family red, white and black colours.
